SCULPTING : PEWTER & BRONZE

Carl stared casting in pewter in 2014 starting with small faces to decorate doors or beams.With more experience of this metal it was possible to cast more detailed work and work with moving parts. Combining pewter with my caving and gold gilling has add more detail to my mix medium sculptures.

WILD BOAR

Richard the 3rd boar.

The White Boar was the personal device or badge of the English King Richard III of England (1452—1485, reigned from 1483), and is an early instance of the use of boars in heraldry.

Livery badges were important symbols of political affiliation in the Wars of the Roses, and Richard distributed very large numbers at his coronation and the installation of his son Edward as Prince of Wales, for which an order of 13,000 badges in fustian cloth is recorded.

Cast in 370g of pewter
Measurements 90mm high x 110mm long x22mm deep.

GREEN MAN ESCUTCHEON

The Green Man is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring. The Green Man is most commonly depicted in a sculpture, or other representation of a face which is made of, or completely surrounded by, leaves.

The Green Man motif has many variations. Branches or vines may sprout from the mouth, nostrils, or other parts of the face, and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit.

The casting comes with two screws for fixings. Cast in 470 grams in pewter.

Measurements 110mm high x 70mm long x 30mm deep.

A jester, court jester, or fool was historically an entertainer during the medieval and Renaissance eras who was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests. Jesters were also itinerant performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets. Jesters are also entertainers who perform at modern-day historically themed events. This was one of my first pieces after seeing the fat man by Ron Mueck gave me the interest to start sculpting, still one of my favourites. I needed to make my sculpting practicable, I have one of these on my own workshop.

MEDUSA

In Greek mythology, Medusa also called Gorgo, was one of the three monstrous Gorgons, generally described as winged human females with living venomous snakes in place of hair. DODO HEAD WALKING STICK

The dodo head walking stick was cast as limited addition 5 for the great dodo exhibition 2013 at Kendal Museum ,thank you to Carol Davies AMA curator-Manager of the museum to make this happen .The catalog for this exhibition are still for sale if you would be interested in one pleases contact me.

As well as carls dodos at the exhibition the bronze dodo from the Pangolin gallery sculptured by the great sculpture Nick Bibby and recreation dod skeletons by Luke Williams.

ZEUS

Zeus is the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek religion, who rules as king of the gods of Mount Olympus. His name is cognate with the first element of his Roman equivalent Jupiter. SKELETON ESCUTCHEON IN COVER

After sculpting the Skeleton escutcheon, I wanted to make it more interesting, so I sculpted this ‘grim reaper’ cover, which fits on top of the skeleton with the key hole.
